Rental deposits are basically insurance for the landlord in case you vacate the apartment before the lease has been completed, or if there are any damages done to the property. When you sign a lease the landlord will usually require a deposit equal to one months rent, but some landlords require the first and last month's rent in addition to the deposit. Once your lease is up the landlord will return part or all of the lease, depending on the state the apartment was left in when you finished moving out. To make sure that you get all of the deposit back, make sure that you clean the apartment thoroughly after you finish moving out.
